This was apparently a show from the RenJianBao Puppet Theater in Taiwan called “The Mermaid of Venice”. I was checking up on the Monkey Wrench Puppet Lab (website), and found that one of their frequenters was creating puppets and babies in Tainan City.
I like the style, even if seeing the dead?? body of a puppet being raped tears at my heart-strings.
This quote is classic:
“We, the puppeteers of Ren Jian Bao feel this show is pretty okay for kids of all ages. But be forewarned: This show contains scenes of puppet on puppet violence, puppet murder, puppet rape, blood, puke, the destruction of proud indigenous cultures, and a potty-mouthed pig.”
As I get more into this odd world of rods and hands shoved up beneath skirts I wonder how Americans ever relegated the art form to entertainment for children and families. Which puppets do we all know? Grover, Kermit, Lamb Chop (gruesome in and of itself). All smiles and gags and songs. I guess we need the things Ren Jian Bao are talking about to break us out of this tunnel vision.
“Ren Jian Bao”, btw, translates loosely from Chinese as “dumplings of humanity”.
